FRC Team Coach/Mentor Role Description

Position Title: FRC Team Coach/Mentor

Overview: The FRC Team Coach/Mentor plays a crucial role in guiding and supporting high school students as they design, build, and program a robot for competition. This individual fosters teamwork, encourages innovation, and helps develop essential skills in students.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Team Leadership:

    • Facilitate team meetings and discussions.
    • Set team goals and objectives for the season.
    • Ensure a positive and inclusive team culture.
  2. Technical Guidance:

    • Provide mentorship in engineering design, programming, and electronics.
    • Assist in troubleshooting and problem-solving during robot development.
    • Encourage hands-on learning and experimentation.
  3. Project Management:

    • Help manage the team’s timeline and project milestones.
    • Coordinate tasks among team members to ensure efficient workflow.
    • Monitor progress and provide feedback throughout the build season.
  4. Safety Oversight:

    • Promote a culture of safety in the workshop and during competitions.
    • Ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations.
  5. Skills Development:

    • Teach students technical skills relevant to robotics, such as CAD, coding, and mechanical assembly.
    • Encourage the development of soft skills, including teamwork, communication, and leadership.
  6. Competition Preparation:

    • Guide the team through the competition process, including strategy development and practice matches.
    • Support students in understanding the game rules and scoring system.
  7. Community Engagement:

    • Act as a liaison between the team and the community, sponsors, and other stakeholders.
    • Promote STEM education and the values of FIRST within the local community.
  8. Reflect and Improve:

    • After competitions, lead discussions on lessons learned and areas for improvement.
    • Help the team set goals for future seasons based on feedback and experiences.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in mentoring or coaching students, preferably in a STEM-related environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for inspiring and motivating young people.
  • Background in engineering, robotics, programming, or a related field is optional.

Commitment:

  • Availability during team meetings, workshops, and competitions, typically spanning the build season (January to April) and competition events.
